To further explore the possibilities of the studio setting, Eno and his friend Peter Schmidt developed a type of instruction cards, Oblique Strategies.[7] During recording of the album, he would allow the cards to dictate the next unconsidered action in the recording process.[7] Describing the words on the album as an expression of "idiot glee", Eno and Schmidt eventually expanded the Oblique Strategies set to over 100 "worthwhile dilemas", which would be used in nearly all his future recordings and productions

Киркегаард и Брайн Ино

Ино: “I’m actually an evangelical atheist, but there is something I recognize about religion: that it gives people a chance to surrender. And I think part of what happens to people when they come into this show is that they practice this feeling of surrendering."

"“I think that sex, drugs, art and religion very much overlap with one another and sometimes one becomes another. So I thought, ‘What do all those things have in common?’ The umbrella that they all exist under is this word, ‘surrender’ because they are all forms of transcendence through surrender. They are ways of transcending your individuality and sense of yourself as a totally separate creature in the world. All of those things involve some kind of loosening of this boundary that is around this thing you call ‘yourself’."

Киркегаард:

""Infinite resignation is the last stage before faith, so anyone who has not made this movement does not have faith, for only in infinite resignation does an individual become conscious of his eternal validity, and only then can one speak of grasping existence by virtue of faith.""
