The article is a bunch of histerical Russia-hating drivel. It's a collection of accusatory notes against Russia, plenty of which can be dug up on any country. Completely skips over any redeeming facts. What is the point of such articles? To incite hatred and prepare the masses for war? Thankfully people in modern times are more aware of such unbalanced presentation of facts.
That is not to say that Russia is without a fault. Obviously it isn't the most free society right now. But let's not assume that the West is a beacon of pure truth and enlightnment either, and each have their own interests and the intent of these kinds of articles seems to be to set the common folks on a collision course to justify wars then draft them into armies and use them as pawns in the interests of those that will never end up on the battlefields.
Tatars were expelled when they were conquered? Plenty of Russians were sold by Tatars into slavery before they were conquered. If the article goes to Russian imperialism all the way to 18th century then why not talk about genocide of native aboriginals in North and South Americas? Why ignore Western empires' slave trade in Africa? Why not mention numerous colonies in Africa, India, Americas, very recent involvement of US in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panama, Nicaragua, Iraq, Afghanistan, Serbia and many others.
Russian totalitarian empire persecuted Tatars and Ukrainians? No, dictator Stalin persecuted Tatars and Ukrainians through mechanisms established under him. Why gloss over the fact that Stalin was not even Russian but Georgian and commited a coup to grab dictatorial power in the initially much less heavy-handed USSR!
Obviously the corrupt government of Yanukovich had to go at some point. But if we financed and encouraged one nationalist revolution now, who is to say there should not be another revolution just because the disaffected don't like the new nationalist anti-Russian and anti-semitic governement. Let's not forget that this unelected government tried to pass the bill to ban teaching Russian and other minority languages in Ukraine. Yes, they promptly backed off after being pressed about it for a week but just imagine what else is coming after they finalize the grip on power.
It's incredible a respectable source such as CNN allows to publish this hatred-inciting drivel.
